The peer-to-peer digital currency Bitcoin made its debut in 2009 and with it ushered in a new era of cryptocurrency. Today, there are more than 500 different cryptocurrencies to choose from, but Bitcoin still enjoys the first mover advantage. While tax authorities, enforcement agencies, and regulators are still exploring the phenomenon, one pertinent question is—is bitcoin legal or illegal? The answer is, it depends on the location and activity of the user.

Miners are the single most important part of any cryptocurrency network, and much like trading, mining is an investment. Essentially, miners are providing a bookkeeping service for their respective communities. They contribute their computing power to solving complicated cryptographic puzzles, which is necessary to confirm a transaction and record it in a distributed public ledger called the Blockchain.

In collaboration with the Center for Civic Media, we will identify and evaluate the status of structurally decentralized projects in the fields of online publishing, online social networks, and discovery of online content (directory and search). From this work we will launch an experiment in building a structurally decentralized publication system designed to solve a real and relevant problem within academic computing, but more broadly, to offer a proof of concept for one approach to building decentralized social networks and publishing systems.

With bitcoin, no one can do either of those things. The only authority on the network is whatever the majority of bitcoin users agree on, and in practice that means nothing more than the basic rules of the network are ever enforced.

However, looking at this from a number of coins and upside basis, I think individual investors could be attracted Ripple (XRP) more, which is basically about 74 cents or so a coin and which I own and plan to hold for the long term.

I searched Ethereum’s subreddit for this service and didn’t see anything negative, although I only scanned the replies for a few minutes. I suggest doing a deep dive and looking for any points of concern, if you don’t find many (or any) then I believe it’s probably safe enough!

Most cryptocurrencies are designed to decrease in production over time like Bitcoin, which creates a market cap on them. That’s different from fiat currencies where financial institutions can always create more, hence inflation. Bitcoin will never have more than 21 million coins in circulation.
